An Inspector Calls
Priestley's classic play of the believable middle-class Yorkshire family called to account for its moral crimes by the enigmatic Inspector Goole stands as a metaphor for our own failure to accept our responsibility to others. Stunningly revived by the Royal National Theatre in 1992, the production transferred to the West End the following year.
The Linden Tree
A college professor who has reached the age of retirement is urged by the family to live in comfort away from his gloomy academic surroundings. The new administration of the university dislikes his views on education and is as anxious as his wfe and children to have him move out. He resists them all. Even when most of his work is taken away from him, he intends to continue teaching the few students who may come to him. He feels that the time of want and unrest, the time of a peaceful revolution, demands the fulfillment of duties. It is not a time for defeatism, or a quick grab at superficial happiness.
Time and the Conways
The Conways are having a party to celebrate Kay's twenty first birthday. Kay hopes to be a novelist. Hazel, the beauty, anticipates a romantic marriage. Madge wants to reform the world and marry the dashing young family lawyer. Carol, the baby of the family, spreads good cheer while Robin, back from war, is certain to have a good career. Alan is content to be an armchair philosopher. The nitwit mother has high hopes for them all. At the party Kay, with frightening clarity, sees her family twenty years in the future. They are petty, mean, and unfulfilled. Only Kay and her calm brother realize time is relative and there is something fine and worthwhile beyond.
