Masks
Award-winning playwright Kendra Thomas has done it again with another outstanding one-act about staying true to yourself and embracing your individuality.
Lynn is excited about the chance her robotics team has to make it to state, even though most of the school is more focused on the football team s chase for a state championship. At the same time, though, Lynn is tired of feeling different from everyone else. Other than her friend, Viviana, nobody seems to care about her interests.
When Lynn discovers a mask that she can hide behind to be more like the popular girls, she is very happy to wear it. Suddenly, she s part of the talk about the big football game and what to wear to the school dance. Unfortunately, it hurts her friendship with Viviana, but if that s the price to pay for being accepted, it s worth it, especially now that she has new friends. It s not until Viviana also dons a mask to fit in that Lynn realizes her mask is hiding the best part of her. As Lynn navigates the cost of fitting in, the nature of the mask and the harm it causes becomes more apparent.
