Summer Of The Seventeenth Doll
This compelling Australian play was a success in London and was hailed by critics in New York for its vigour, integrity, and faithful portrayal of an unfamiliar scene. It tells of two itinerant cane-cutters: Barney, a swaggering little gamecock, and Roo, a big man who is a born leader. They have spent their past sixteen summer lay-offs with two barmaids in a southern city. Every summer Roo has brought a tinseled doll to Olive, his girl, as a gift to symbolize their unusual but tender relationship, but this summer is one of change and climax. Old familiar patterns must be broken, new ways found, and the characters must face certain unpleasant truths about themselves.
