The Iceman Cometh
Into a waterfront bar full of life's failures, comes Hickey with his urge to make them all face the truth. Recently revived in London and New York with Kevin Spacey. '....It is full of vivid low-life, pictured in his earlier plays, but the tone is mellower. (He takes a bar-hotel of about 1912 and peoples it with wrecks of men who are kept alive by whisky and their illusions: when they have lost their illusions they have nothing left.) It is a strange play with a compelling force in it. Without losing his grasp of colourful speech and character O'Neill has vindicated his 'perceptive knowledge of the human heart'. (Irish Times)
