Mary Barnes
Based on a true story about a group of people who believed fiercely in a particular view of the nature of madness and who attempted to live that belief in a peculiarly intense and passionate way. Mary Barnes, diagnosed as a hopeless schizophrenic, spent much of her life in hospitals where she was kept in padded cells and drugged and shocked into numbness. She is finally placed in an alternative community for the mentally ill run by psychiatrists who oppose drug and shock treatment and is put on the road to recovery. 'It disturbs, revolts and moves an audience in a way that serves a jolting reminder of the awesome power of theatre! (Darien News)
