Dancing Gold
An adaptation of Kilkenny Rose , Dancing Gold is set in and around a boarding house in the
goldfields town of Thames in the latter part of 19th Century. It could be Waihi or Otago with
only minor changes. Sophie escapes from her brutal brother Ivan after they ve newly arrived
in New Zealand. She joins the staff of Barbara s boarding house, but Ivan eventually finds her.
The author, June Allen, is eager to show that long ago these towns had many female inhabitants
that were often the backbone of the gold mining community. Two males, four females one of
whom should be dressed as a mature woman. All others can be 18 to 25 years of age.
