Punch & Judy - The Real Story
Punch & Judy: the Real Story has been described as the funniest play about domestic violence ever written. To say it s a black comedy is probably a bit of an understatement. Punch & Judy, often associated with traditional British seaside culture (along with sunburn and knotted handkerchiefs), is usually a violent puppet show with Mr. Punch gleefully beating a variety of characters with a stick most often his wife, Judy. Hmm, it doesn t sound that funny when you write it down. It s this dilemma laughing at something horrendous (the very definition of black comedy) that Debbie Isitt mines for all it's worth in her confronting and violently amusing play.
