Ray and Jack are journalists investigating "the new slave trade": people trafficking. Anja is a Moldovan prostitute whom Ray pays to tell the story of how she came to be working in a brothel in London. Soon Ray finds himself attracted to Anja, and he comes up with a plan to rescue her from the brothel and bring her back to Hull with him. His wife Caz and daughter Amy struggle to accept her into their lives. Written as part of Hull's Wilberforce celebrations, Sold serves as a stark reminder that slavery remains a critical issue in 21st century Britain. Contained in the volume John Godber Plays: 4.
